Doctor Shortage

I’m so frustrated.

So there are no family doctors accepting new patients in Woodstock, so for the first time in my life I am without a family doctor. Go figures I actually need a family doctor too.

So I used to have pretty horrible acne. Back in first year it was the worst it had ever been. I ended up going on medication to get rid of the acne – Diane 35 which was a form of the pill that was actually prescribed for acne and not for the general purpose of the pill. When my dad retired I switched to another form of the pill that was supposed to help with acne. While I was on that I would get the occasional break out, but nothing too horrible. Nothing like it used to be. Well, now I no longer have a family doctor, so I can’t get a prescription, and my skin is getting horrible. In another month or so it will be back to where it was when I was 19 years old. Something I really don’t want. Particularly with our wedding coming up. Basically in order for it to be cleared up in time for our wedding, I need to get into see a doctor now, but I don’t see how that is even possible.

Are walk-in clinics able to help? I haven't been to one in a while, but if you just need a prescription renewal, they may be able to help you until you can see a family doctor.

Good luck in your doctor search!

I don't think this kind of visit is appropriate for a walk-in clinic. Walk-in clinics are usually emergency/urgent appointments and this isn't either of those.

I don't know. Maybe you're right. Couldn't hurt to ask them though!

And if you're running out of a prescription, if nothing else, they may be able to provide you with a few months' worth until you can see a regular doctor.

The problem is that I don't have a regular doctor, unless you count my childhood family doctor in Belleville. I haven't seen him since I was in highschool.

Hmm, I was just thinking as a temporary fix until you find a regular doctor. Could you find one in London? Not as convenient as Woodstock, but near your office might be ok.

I'm no help really. I'm still with the same doctor as I had in high school.

I would first call a walk-in clinic to see if they can help you. You might be surprised; lots of people use walk-in clinics for regular doctor stuff if they don't have a regular doctor.

If not, I would say go see your family doctor in Belleville. Even if you haven't been there in awhile, you should still be considered a patient since you never told them otherwise, right? They should still have all your records and such.

The clinic I go to is technically a walk-in clinic, but they operate a little differently than ones I'm used to. You can request which doctor you want to wait for - and thus are able to see the same doctor each time you visit. They also book a limited number of appointments. I consider my doctor there to be my family doctor. Perhaps there are walk-in clinics in your area that work in a similar fashion?

Definitely go for the walk-in clinic - most of the population of TBay doesn't have a family Dr. and depends on walk-ins for prescription renewals, as well as when they are sick.
Dr. Brearley will also see you if you can coordinate an appt. I saw him for a prescription renewal when I was back from Tz on holiday, even though I have my own family Dr. here in TBay, because it was too complicated to book an appt with her.

I know that Dr. S. told Paula H. that she could keep going to see him at Health Services until she was able to find a family doctor...So maybe that is another back-up option you could keep in mind -- although probably not very convenient to drive there. =( (sorry, I keep posting this and then deleting it because I've realized I've put full names...hopefully this is the last re-do!)

I'm in the same boat.

I'm guessing you tried this website?

Althought it may be outdated...

Some argue that the physician shortage is partially due to the increased number of female doctors. They claim they have less longevity than their male counterparts, take more time off for maternity and family matters, and work less hours and take less overnight call.

Brain Blogger recently wrote about this issue. We would love to hear your commentary. Thank you.

Sincerely,
