LJs Revelation - April 17th

I love the word being.

The contaminant mass is being removed from the aquifer material.

Why the heck do I need being in there? I think I've deleted "being" from over 20 sentences over the last hour. Jeepers!

It's just one of those things... just like you don't need to put "In order to" in a sentence 80% of the time, most of the time you can get rid of the "in order".

And don't forget all your oxford commas! That's a pet peeve of mine when people forget to put in the last comma in a list.

Oh, I never forget the last comma in the list. Learned my lesson for that on work reports!

Yeah no one does the comma thing here! I've actually been told it's incorrect to put a comma there!

I think the word being in there tells us that it's in the process of being removed...

I've also been told that the last comma in a list is incorrect... but then other people say to include it. I'm kind of random with that particular thing.

LJ you make me laugh!

Commas confuse the hell out of me. I'm sure you can all tell how poor my punctuation and grammar skills are when you read my blog.

Interesting thing about the oxford comma... Omission can result in ambiguity or misreading. My mom used to teach a lot of courses on grammar and the example she used was when a man had died and in his will, he had left his estate to be split between his children: Mary, Joe and Bob. Therefore, Mary got 50%, Joe got 25%, and Bob got 25%. When in fact he likely meant that they should each get 33%, but without the comma, it was misinterpreted!

I also love the example in the Canadian writer's reference we had to buy in first year. Here is the example they used:

The activities include a search for lost treasure, dubious financial dealings, much discussion of ancient heresies, and midnight orgies.

Without the comma, the people seem to be discussing orgies, not participating in them. Funny example, eh? I laughed when I found that one.

So are you free and clear of the thesis now or are you still working away on it?
